On the occasion of the International Day Against Impunity, the EU Special Envoy, Michele Cervone d’Urso, condemns the targeted assassination of journalists in Somalia that brought, this year alone, the toll of media workers, killed in Somalia, to 18. He commends the courageous work of journalists who, despite this insecurity, continue to provide independent information in Somalia.
The EU Ambassador welcomes the President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s recent pledge to tackle impunity and to create of a Task Force to investigate the killing of journalists, which should bring the identified perpetrators to justice.
Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of a free and democratic society. We stand ready to support the Government in its
new initiatives to protect this fundamental right and to address the culture of impunity.
