Mogadishu-16 February 2013; The African Union Mission in Somalia has condemned today’s terror attack which targeted civilians outside a popular restaurant in Mogadishu.
At least two people were killed and several others wounded when a car bomb exploded outside the Lido Restaurant. Eight vehicles were also destroyed by the blast, which is suspected to be the work of the Al Qaeda affiliated terror group, al Shabaab.
AMISOM-trained Somali firefighters were quickly on the scene to put out the fires from the smoking wrecks.
The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on Somalia, Amb. Mahamat Annadif, termed the attack a heinous and cowardly assault on the people of Mogadishu.
“Such attacks demonstrate that the terrorists do not care about the welfare of ordinary Somalis. AMISOM, on the other hand, is committed to helping the Somali national security forces improve security for the country’s citizens,” he said.
Amb. Annadif sent his condolences to the family and friends of the victims of the attack and his prayers for a quick recovery for the injured. “AMISOM will continue to do everything in its power to support the Somali people and to ensure that the terrorist threat is eradicated so that the population can go about their daily lives without fear,” he added.
Over the last 18 months, with help from AMISOM, Somali national security forces have pushed the al Shabaab out of much of south and central Somalia. Thousands of Somalis displaced by the years of anarchy have been returning to the country to take advantage of the relative peace and begin rebuilding their lives.
